The Life-Saving Properties of the Avocado

June 9, 2015 by Jonathan Armstead

Fuzzy's Taco Shop

Avocados save lives.

Not only are they chock full of healthiness, they’re downright delicious. They’re good to the brain and the stomach, and at Fuzzy’s Taco Shop, we love to incorporate them in any way we can.

But why are they so beneficial? Is it because they’re green, and most green things are good for us (hello, spinach and Kermit the Frog)? Isn’t that how life works?

Well, yes, but there’s a little more to it than that. Here’s the 411:

Good for the heart

Avocados are rich in monounsaturated oleic acid (aka good fat) that reduces low-density cholesterol while increasing the more beneficial high-density cholesterol. It also helps to regulate blood sugar—good news for anyone with diabetes. And avocados contain several heart-healthy nutrients, including vitamin E, folate, potassium, phytosterols and dietary fiber.

Good for the skin

Speaking of monounsaturated fats, they also help maintain balanced moisture levels in the skin’s outer layer, causing skin to look and feel healthy and soft and reducing irritation and redness. They’re great for repairing damaged skin cells, too, and they fight against signs of aging. You could rub avocados on your skin, but we recommend sticking with regular consumption. Much tastier that way.

Good for losing weight

Because avocados provide “good” fat, your body will use it for slow-burning energy instead of storing it as body fat. Despite the hype around eating low-fat foods to lose weight, it’s better to eat a well-rounded diet that includes nutrients supplied by good-fat-bearing foods. More avocados, please!

Good for battling arthritis

Avocados are an anti-inflammatory, reported to assist in providing respite from arthritis. (What can’t they do?!) Good thing you can add avocado to just about any order at Fuzzy’s Taco Shop—tacos, salads, burritos y mas. Start your meal off with guacamole and you’ll really be doing things right.

So the next time you feel like going on a health kick, swing by Fuzzy’s and get your avocado on. It’s a win-win.
